Walking around Astorga our first night I saw lots of cafés advertising Cocido Maragato, or Maragato stew. I vaguely remember pictures of assorted meats and chickpeas, so I assumed it was the León region’s version of Olla Podrido.
Having only eaten a breakfast of dry scrambled eggs and toast, lunched on churros y chocolat and enjoyed a couple of beers in the afternoon, D2 and I were quite peckish by 6:00pm. Time to try Cocido Maragato! I was presented with what I can only describe as pig’s bits and pieces
I waited for a bit to see if anything else was coming, but no, so I did my best, helped by D2, to get through the plate of protein. It was a bit dry and some bits looked too much like the pig they came from, but overall quite tasty. When the waiter came I assured him it was muy bien, and thought about having dessert. Did I learn nothing from the Olla Podrida experience????
Next came a large plate of garlicky chickpeas and cabbage.
Quite delicious but even with the help of D2 I was unable to finish the plate. A vague memory of soup from pictures on cafe advertising floated into my mind, and sure enough, as soon as the unfinished chickpeas were whisked away, I was presented with a bowl of pig noodle soup, certainly the most tasty of the three dishes!
So that was it, Cocido Maragato. I guess it should be experienced as presented, but actually I would have just liked a big bowl of pork and chickpea soup!!
